2013: Pre-Birthday Favorites

Counter Intuits. Pretty good band name.

People (blogs) are putting together lists of their favorite releases of the year thus far, "thus far" being roughly the halfway point. As a list enthusiast—and a music enthusiast as well, I suppose...—I couldn't help but think about my own favorite releases of this year; however, rather than cut the year in half per se, I'm cutting it into pre-Birthday (my birthday, that is) and post-. My birthday's June 14, so it works out pretty good—and it adds weight, for me and not for you, to think of these releases as relating to my twenty year-old self and then, presumably, to relate the releases of the next few months to my twenty-one year-old self. While it's cool and important and stuff to think about music in its own specific temporal context—i.e. the year in which it was recorded and/or released—it's cool and important and stuff for each person (especially those with ~blogs~) to think about music in the context of his or her own life, a la my main man, John Cusack. Anyways, lots of good stuff so far this year—not as much great stuff, but definitely a lot of good stuff. Below are thirty of my favorite LPs, EPs, and singles listed in alphabetical order. (My top five, sort of, are bolded.)

Wolf Eyes—No Answer: Lower Floors (De Stijl)
Yo La Tengo—Fade (Matador)

As an addendum, I'll include ten releases from 2013 that I haven't listened to that I'd probably like. (These are just off the top of my head; there are certainly many more.) This is just so if you're about to be like, "How could Joe not like ________?" you can see here that I don't not like ________, I just haven't heard it. If ________ isn't listed above or below, rest assured: I hate it and it sucks.

The Body—Master, We Perish (At A Loss)
Charlie Parr—Barnswallow (Tin Angel)
Chris Corsano and Bill Orcutt—The Raw and The Cooked (Palilalia)
Dean Blunt—The Redeemer (Hippos In Tanks)
Eleanor Friedberger—Personal Record (Merge)

Mordecai—College Rock (Richie)
Sam Amidon—Bright Sunny South (Nonesuch)
Violent Change—Violent Change (Catholic Guilt)
William Tyler—The Impossible Truth (Merge)
Zs—Grain (Northern Spy)

See you in year-end-list season.
